In the Count of Monte Cristo, why doesn't Villefort use a telegram?

I think you have hit on the answer - that Villefort hoped the king would think highly of him - that, plus the fact that only a certain amount of information can be included in a telegram - being there in person to fill in all the details would be more beneficial, both for the king and for Villefort.
