Should I buy Minecraft?

None of my friends have the game and I like the concept of building and exploring. When I buy games I usually get it cause my friends have it and we can play together. Is it even worth the $20? Also I want to play like a demo to see if my laptop can run this game. I don't want to buy it and not have it work.
