What is the different between Deputy sheriff and police officer and patrol officer?

A deputy works for a sheriff's department and a police officer or patrol officer (same thing) works for a police department. The only real difference is that the sheriff usually patrols the whole county and the police only patrol their city. Other than that they do pretty much the same job.
